Tipper trucks date back to the 1920’s and 30’s when they first came into being. They are basically divided into two types according to the way that the body is configured. The one that is known as the standard type is the one that empties its’ bed at the rear of the vehicle. This has hinges at the rear of the chassis and a hydraulic ram at the front of the body just behind the cab. The hinges effectively hold down the bed and allow it to be raised, while the hydraulic ram produces sufficient power to lift the body and its contents high in the air which then tip out at the rear of the vehicle.
The standard type of tipper truck is fine for use on sites where there is plenty of space. The driver needs to be able to move around and get the vehicle into the correct position for tipping the load.
However, on sites where the space is limited it would be a much better idea to use a three-way tipper. As the name suggests, this can tip not only off the rear, but also off the left or right side of the bed. This is achieved by the use of two hydraulic rams on each side of the vehicle. Lifting the two rams on the left side of the bed will allow it to dump to the right, and vice versa. Lifting the rams behind the cab will tip to the rear, as with the standard tipper.
