Many people who go abroad for their holidays will hire a car when they get to their destination, so that they can go wherever they wish, much in the same way as they do at home. For example, if you are going to Mallorca. it IS possible to drive down through France and on to Barcelona and then get the ferry to the island, but it is going to take time and cost money. Far better to fly there and hire a car.
